Must-Have Items for King Build

How to Unlock Build Components
Some items in this King Lucky Sharpshooter King build require unlocking before they can be used. Note that items listed in "Avoid" sections are also shown here - check the build details to see if unlocking them is necessary for this strategy.

Overview: Why Pistol?
Most of the time, pistol gets easily outclassed by most weapons. However, due it’s cheap cost and high base damage, it works amazingly with King. King works best when you use cheap weapons that don’t need too much damage investment, which is exactly what pistol provides. Using pistols will make it very easy to kill elites and bosses, but it can be a little difficult to handle horde waves. It’s important to find a way to deal with them. My go-to is Cyberballs and Baby Elephants, but Baby with a Beard is also very effective.

Early Game (1-6)
In the early game shops, it’s important to get to six tier II pistols as fast as possible. Having a single tier I pistol is fine if you’re planning to merge it, but never have more than two, otherwise the damage penalty will easily cripple you. You want to be very particular with items. You lose 2 Max HP whenever you buy a tier I item for the first time, but you can still get multiple copies of the item without getting further punished. I’m usually looking for items like Broken Mouth or Weird Ghost, as they give more Max HP than you lose, making them a very easy source of Max HP in the early game. But if you’re not confident about your dodging abilities, I would stay away from Weird Ghost. Gentle Alien is also powerful, as the first one you buy won’t affect your Max HP at all. Economic items like Bag, Tree, Fertilizer, and Coupon, are worth the -2 Max HP downside. They are strong economic items that easily pay for themselves. If I see a Baby Elephant or Cyberball during the early game, I’m willing to take it.

Mid Game (7-15)
By wave 7 or 8, you should have your first tier IV pistol. This makes having a single tier I pistol less punishing, so it’s fine to have one during the mid game. Your +50 luck bonus will make it easier to find higher tier pistols, so you’ll be getting another tier IV pistol about every three waves, give or take. You want to lean into luck as much as you can. Not only will you reach tier IV pistols faster, but you’ll find more tier IV items, which will give you extra Max HP on top of having powerful effects. Recycling Machine will be very powerful on King, since you’ll find higher tier items which will recycle for more value. Ranged damage and crit chance will end up being a large part of the damage that you want to build. You will already be getting a huge amount of %damage and attack speed by having tier IV weapons, so investing into ranged damage and crit chance will increase your DPS very well. If you find tier IV items in the shop, I usually take it if it actively helps the build. If it doesn’t, I may not. You need to be considerate of the material cost. If I get a tier IV item from a crate, I’ll always take it unless it actively hurts the build. You should also find a sustainable way to heal. Consumable healing will be reliable, but Tentacle and life steal are also viable.

End Game (16-20)
If you’ve made it this far, you’ve probably already won. You have enough damage to defeat the bosses, so any more materials should be put into building up survivability in the event that something bad does happen. There is a chance that you find a Gatling Laser or Chain Gun. They’re pretty much buy-on-sight.

Reminder
This guide is just a rough outline. Not everything that happens in your game will work in your favor. You could have really bad RNG and not get any of the crucial items. A big part of Brotato is being able to adapt to what the shop gives you. If you can’t find something you need, you need to find a way to compensate for it.
