Archäologe Guide: Grabungsstellen, Kisten & Builds
Is Archaeologist good in Brotato?
Archaeologist is a powerful, economy-focused character built around farming crates instead of killing enemies for materials. If you can reliably stand on dig sites and leverage recycling, he snowballs hard into late game, but he feels weak early on if you ignore harvesting and trees.
Strengths
- Huge crate generation through dig sites, enabling tons of free items and reroll value
- 75% more materials from recycling crates turns unwanted items into a strong economy engine
- Permanent XP scaling (+3% XP Gain per crate collected) allows very high level counts and many stat rolls
- +25% pickup range makes collecting materials, XP, and mech parts comfortable without heavy investment
- Synergizes extremely well with tree, bag, and crate-focused items for explosive scaling
Weaknesses
- -50% materials dropped from enemies makes normal farming much weaker if you ignore crates
- Needs time standing still on dig sites, which is dangerous on high waves with dense ranged enemies
- Relies heavily on getting good crate RNG and key economy items (Bag, Recycling Machine) to feel strong
- Movement speed and defenses are very important; poor positioning around pits, poison and charges can end runs
- Weapon upgrades can lag behind if you overspend on economy and utility instead of damage

Archaeologist Stats & Passive Ability
Archaeologist completely redefines your economy. Instead of relying on enemy drops, you generate value through dig sites and crates. Each wave, four dig sites appear; standing on one for a few seconds spawns a crate, so your positioning and crowd control are critical. Because you earn 75% more materials from recycling crates and gain permanent XP bonus per crate, you are incentivized to open many crates and often recycle items you don't need. The +25% pickup range lets you vacuum materials, XP, fruits, and mech parts from a safe distance, which pairs well with standing-still items and structures. However, the -50% materials dropped from enemies means standard early waves are starved if you don't invest in harvesting and trees. Successful Archaeologist runs lean into crates, tree density, Bags, and Recycling Machine, while making sure you have enough damage and movement speed to safely sit on dig sites even in crowded, projectile-heavy situations.

Strategy
🌱Early Game (Waves 1–5): Secure Shovels, Harvesting & First Bags
Open with Shovel as your starter weapon and commit to it as your main damage source. Your goal in the first waves is to afford more Shovels while still standing on at least 1–2 dig sites each wave. Because enemy material drops are halved, prioritize early Harvesting on level-ups and cheap economy items so your income doesn't fall behind. Pick up Bag as soon as you see it, since Archaeologist converts extra crate value into a huge economy spike. Items that increase pickup range (Alien Tongue, Baby Gecko, Little Frog) make grabbing materials and crates safer while you dance around pits and poison. Trees are already excellent here: Lumberjack Shirt and Tree push more crates into your path without relying on enemy drops.
⚡Mid Game (Waves 6–12): Full Shovel Setup & Dig-Site Discipline
In mid game you should reach 4–6 Shovels and start upgrading them. Shovel scales with Melee Damage and Luck, so stack both while maintaining enough Attack Speed to feel comfortable in melee. Luck is extra valuable: it helps Shovels dig up crates from kills more often and improves crate quality. Your gameplay loop becomes: rush the nearest dig site, clear the area, stay on it until the crate pops, then rotate to the next. Ranged enemies and charging dinos make this risky, so armor and HP are crucial. Items like Snail, Ugly Tooth, Wandering Bot, and Tardigrade help control threat and prevent sudden deaths while you’re busy digging. Use XP-focused items (Scar, Bean Teacher, Black Belt) to capitalize on your passive XP Gain per crate, snowballing into many strong stat rolls.
🔥Late Game (Waves 13+ & Bosses): Crate Engine Online
Late game Archaeologist has an absurd number of items and levels if you’ve played around dig sites correctly. At this point you should clear all four dig sites most waves and still have time to farm enemies and trees. Defense becomes the priority: stack Armor, Max HP, and some Dodge so elites, mechanized enemies, and bosses don't burst you while you stand still on a dig site. High Melee Damage, enough Attack Speed, and some Crit Chance are usually enough for Shovels to melt even tanky targets. Keep buying Bags and Recycling Machine if they appear, and don’t hesitate to recycle mediocre items from crates for a big 75% bonus return. For boss waves, clear dig sites early in the wave if possible, then kite bosses around pits and poison zones while letting your high melee scaling plus any support structures or pets finish them off.
Best weapons for Archaeologist
Shovel directly complements Archaeologist’s crate-focused passive by adding an extra chance to dig up crates from kills. It scales with Melee Damage and Luck, which are already core stats for this build, and lets you generate even more crates on top of the four from dig sites.
Meat Tenderizer is a very strong defensive melee weapon that scales from both Melee Damage and HP Regeneration. On Archaeologist, it turns the defensive regen you want for safe digging into massive damage, making it ideal if you prefer a tanky, brawling style over pure crate-farming with Shovels.
Crowbar provides extra structures and a stacking damage debuff, great for holding areas around dig sites. It works especially well if you add some Engineering and pick up structure items, letting you defend excavation zones while you stand still to dig.
Pruner generates Gardens that spawn fruits, giving you extra sustain while you hold excavation sites in dangerous areas. Archaeologist already likes standing still and has large pickup range, so passive healing fruits appearing around the map synergize nicely.
Screwdriver lets you seed landmines around the map that clear packs while you focus on getting crates. This works well on Archaeologist when combined with Engineering items and pocket factories to build a self-defending jungle of structures protecting each dig site.
Best items for Archaeologist (core item pool)
Archaeologist generates far more crates than normal through dig sites and Shovel kills. Bag converts each crate into a large flat material payout, and your 75% extra recycling value multiplies this further, making it arguably the single strongest economy item for this character.
You open huge numbers of crates, but not every item will fit your build. Recycling Machine stacks multiplicatively with Archaeologist’s 75% bonus recycling, letting you turn unwanted crate drops into a flood of materials and rerolls.
Dig Site adds additional dig spots on top of your built-in four, directly feeding your crate engine. Even with the Luck penalty, the extra crates plus your strong recycling multipliers more than make up for it.
Archaeologist already wants trees for extra crates and materials to compensate for low enemy drops. Lumberjack Shirt lets you instantly clear every tree you see, generating more crates and value from the jungle map’s tree density.
More trees means more crates and free materials without relying on enemies. This stacks perfectly with Lumberjack Shirt, Bag, and your recycling bonus to turbocharge your economy each wave.
You frequently stand on dig sites or behind pits while dodging dense projectiles. Extra pickup range ensures you still collect most materials and XP without leaving safe positions, and it stacks with your innate +25% range.
Little Frog simultaneously fixes two Archaeologist needs: better pickup range for distant drops and extra Harvesting to offset low enemy materials. The Dodge loss is acceptable if you stack Armor and HP.
Your passive already gives XP Gain per crate; Scar pushes this further, giving you many more level-ups than other characters. Those extra stat rolls are critical to scale damage and defenses to handle elites while you dig.
Bean Teacher stacks with your crate XP passive, letting you level extremely quickly. Life Steal is optional in Shovel builds, so sacrificing a bit of it is usually worth the snowballing power of faster XP.
Black Belt gives XP Gain and flat Melee Damage, both premium stats for Shovels. The Luck penalty is noticeable but can be offset by other Luck items, and the Knockback helps keep melee ranges clear while you channel dig sites.
Archaeologist tends to play short range with Shovels or Meat Tenderizer, so losing some Range is acceptable. In return you gain a large, efficient Damage multiplier that boosts both clear and boss DPS using the stats you already stack.
On a character with strong economy from crates, spawning more enemies is usually an advantage as long as you can handle the pressure. Gentle Alien boosts both Max HP and Damage while increasing enemy count, giving you more targets for Shovels and more materials via Bags and recycling.
Archaeologist High-Difficulty Strategy
Early Game
On high difficulty, your first priority is stabilizing income despite -50% enemy materials. Rush Shovels and at least one Bag, then focus level-ups on Harvesting, Melee Damage, and Movement Speed. Aim to secure 2–3 dig sites per wave while still killing enough enemies to avoid getting overrun. Avoid sacrificing too much speed for early armor; you must be able to reposition quickly between pits, poison pools, and ranged packs.
Mid Game
Once you have 4–6 Shovels and a few Bags/Recycling Machine, play around dig sites methodically: clear the area, stand on the site until the crate appears, then rotate. Buy XP and Luck items so every crate significantly boosts long-term scaling. Start investing heavily into Armor, Max HP, and some Dodge, because mechanized and charging enemies can delete you while you’re rooted. Use tree items (Tree, Lumberjack Shirt) to add extra crates that don’t depend on dig-site uptime.
Late Game
In late waves and boss fights, you should be fully online: high Melee Damage, strong defenses, and a massive item count. Clear all four dig sites as early in the wave as possible so you can focus on surviving elites and bosses. Position bosses near map edges and pits so you have clear kiting routes and don’t get trapped in poison. If your damage is high, you can even stand near a boss and trade hits thanks to stacked armor and HP, letting Shovels or Meat Tenderizer finish them quickly.
💡 Archaeologist on high difficulty is all about disciplined crate play. If you respect dig sites, invest early in harvesting and Bags, and then pivot into strong melee scaling and defenses, your item and XP advantage will overwhelm even the nastiest elite and boss waves. Ignoring crates or neglecting movement and armor, however, will make the jungle’s projectiles and charges brutally punishing.
Archaeologist FAQ
1How do I play Archaeologist effectively in Brotato?▼
Center your game plan around dig sites and crates. Each wave, prioritize standing on dig sites long enough to spawn crates, then recycle unwanted items to leverage the 75% recycling bonus. Invest early in Harvesting, Bags, and tree items to offset -50% enemy materials, then scale Melee Damage, Luck, and defenses so you can safely dig even in crowded waves.
2Which weapons are best for Archaeologist?▼
Shovel is the standout choice because it directly generates extra crates on kill and scales with Melee Damage and Luck, the stats you already want. Meat Tenderizer is a strong alternative for a tanky regen-based melee build, while Crowbar, Pruner, and Screwdriver can be mixed in if you want more structures and area control around dig sites.
3What stats should I prioritize on Archaeologist?▼
Early on, focus on Harvesting, Melee Damage, and Movement Speed to keep your economy and clear speed healthy. As the run progresses, add Luck to improve Shovel crate procs and item quality, then stack Armor, Max HP, and some Dodge so you can stand on dig sites and face elites without getting instantly killed.
4How do I deal with Archaeologist’s -50% materials dropped from enemies?▼
You compensate by leaning into everything that boosts crate value. Buy Bags and Recycling Machine, take tree items like Tree and Lumberjack Shirt, and pick up Dig Site. Because you gain 75% more from recycling, it’s fine to recycle many crate items; their material value will rival or exceed what you’d get from regular enemy drops.
5Are tree and bag items really that important for Archaeologist?▼
Yes. More trees mean more crates and consumables to replace the resources you lose from halved enemy drops. Bag in particular is incredibly strong on Archaeologist because he produces far more crates than a normal character, turning each crate into a huge burst of materials that fuels your shop and rerolls.
6Is Archaeologist good for Endless runs?▼
Archaeologist scales very well into Endless because his passive XP Gain per crate and recycling bonuses keep generating value long after other characters plateau. As long as you keep up with dig sites, maintain strong melee damage, and continue to invest in defenses, the constant influx of items from crates lets him remain competitive deep into Endless.
7How should I position around pits and poison on the jungle map?▼
Use pits as natural barriers while you stand on nearby dig sites, but don’t trap yourself with no escape route. Avoid standing in poison zones or enemy slow puddles, since being slowed while channeling a dig site is extremely dangerous. Extra movement speed and pickup range help you move between safe digging spots without missing drops.
