Variant Mutations-Build & Guide
Is Variant good in Brotato?
Variant is a high-ceiling, high-variance character whose power comes from stacking mutations and turning mediocre items into strong mutated versions. It can be very strong in longer runs but is harder and more inconsistent than most early on.
Strengths
- Automatic mutation every wave gives free stats and item upgrades over time
- Can only evolve on the Mutant side, guaranteeing access to mutant-focused items and synergies
- 50% chance for mutating items to be upgraded to better tiers, enabling late-game red item stacks
- Scales extremely well in long runs and Endless thanks to tumors copying many item effects
Weaknesses
- -25% XP Gain makes early levels and stats slow to obtain
- Mutations are partially random; you can lose or transform items you wanted to keep
- Heavily reliant on understanding evolution/mutation mechanics to avoid bricking your build
- Needs time to ramp up; weak early waves can feel punishing on higher difficulties
Variant Stats & Passive Ability
Variant revolves around the evolution system and the Mutant side of the tree. You gain evolution by picking up mutation fruits from mutated enemies, and unlike most characters, Variant can only move towards the Mutant side. At the end of every wave, Variant automatically triggers a mutation: either an item in your inventory mutates (often losing a negative stat or becoming a different, usually stronger item), or a tumor gains a copied effect from one of your items. Because you also have a 50% chance for mutating items to be replaced by higher-tier mutated versions, Variant naturally ramps into powerful blue, purple, and even red items if you survive long enough. The downside is the -25% XP Gain: you level more slowly and must be disciplined about taking strong stat ups. Overall, the recommended playstyle is to survive the early waves with solid generic stats, buy lots of items to give mutations good targets, and let the automatic mutations snowball you into a strong late-game build.

Strategy
🌱Early Game
Open with a ranged weapon that scales well from flat Ranged Damage, like Machine Gun or Pistol. Your top priority is simply surviving while your mutations ramp up. Focus your level-up choices on Ranged Damage, Attack Speed, and some Max HP or HP Regeneration. Because you have -25% XP Gain, every level matters. In the shop, buy cheap Tier 1 items with strong upsides even if they have negatives; many of those downsides can later be removed by mutations. Items that increase Evolution (Virus, Jamming Backpack, Boosted Mitosis, Flare, Evolved Leap) are premium picks whenever they appear, since they accelerate how quickly mutant mechanics start paying off. Don’t reroll too aggressively in the first few waves; you need weapons online and a wide item base for your tumors to copy.
⚡Mid Game
Once you reach mid game, you should have a couple of tumors with copied effects and several items that have already mutated into stronger versions. Start consolidating your weapon lineup around strong ranged guns: upgrade Machine Gun into higher tiers and add Minigun, Obliterator or other high-scaling guns as they appear. Use your Evolution-focused items to push your evolution value higher so that tumors copy stronger versions of item effects and evolved enemies drop more mutation fruits. Prioritize survivability against the increasingly dangerous mutated enemies on jungle-style maps: invest in Armor, HP Regeneration and maybe some Life Steal, and respect puddles and on-death explosions from evolved enemies. Because Variant passively mutates once each wave, keep buying items consistently to give the mutations good targets; a broad item pool lets tumors stack many positive effects and gives more chances to upgrade mediocre items into strong mutated ones.
🔥Late Game
In late game and Endless-style runs, Variant’s power spikes when your evolution value is high and your tumors have copied many different item effects. At this point, focus on polishing your weapon lineup: keep a small set of powerful ranged weapons and upgrade them to high tiers so that automatic mutations are more likely to create red-tier monster items. Evolution items like Wildfire Mutation and Exothermic Reaction greatly increase the value of evolved enemies by granting economy, explosions and survivability when they die. You can also lean into damage multipliers (Wisdom, Triangle of Power, Focus-like effects from mutations) once your defenses feel safe. For elite and boss waves, rely on your upgraded guns, Evolution-based bonus damage, and crowd control from mutations to keep distance while your stacked tumors and red items do the heavy lifting.
Best weapons for Variant
Fires continuously and scales from flat Ranged Damage, letting Variant farm kills and mutation fruits efficiently. Its high fire rate benefits greatly from Tumor-copied damage bonuses and Evolution-based debuffs on enemies.
A natural late-game upgrade for ranged Variant builds: extreme fire rate plus piercing works perfectly with Evolution items that make evolved enemies explode, drop extra materials or take more damage.
Massive single-projectile damage with piercing lets you demolish high-HP mutated elites and bosses that otherwise outscale chip damage. Variant’s tumors and Evolution-based damage boosts help ensure each shot really counts.
Provides reliable explosions to pair with Evolution items like Exothermic Reaction and Explosive Shells. It is especially good when you already scale Ranged Damage and want more AOE pressure on evolved packs.
Provides strong slowing on hit, which is valuable against fast mutated jungle enemies and elites. Variant’s weaker early defenses benefit a lot from ranged crowd control while mutations ramp up.
Simple, reliable starter gun that scales from Ranged Damage and offers basic piercing. Great for early waves to safely farm evolution fruits while you are still learning enemies and mutation patterns.
Best items for Variant (core item pool)
Directly interacts with evolved enemies Variant sees frequently. Charming low-HP evolved targets both reduces pressure and effectively multiplies your damage, and the small Attack Speed penalty can later be removed by mutations.
Rewards Variant for dealing with evolved enemies by giving extra materials and Life Steal. The more Evolution you stack, the more valuable this becomes, and late-game mutations can help offset the extra enemy damage.
Turbocharges the mutation loop by dramatically increasing the number of mutation fruits. Variant converts those directly into evolution value and more automatic mutations every wave, quickly snowballing item and tumor power.
Essential late-game power spike item for Variant, stacking multiplicatively with the character’s own 50% upgrade chance. It dramatically increases the odds of turning low-tier items into powerful blue, purple, or red mutated versions.
Turns Evolution into area damage: as you raise Evolution, evolved enemies effectively nuke their neighbors on death. This is extremely strong on dense jungle waves and synergizes well with ranged builds and other explosive tools.
Flat Evolution and strong slow on mecha enemies help Variant reach high evolution levels faster while staying safe. The extra control buys time for your auto-mutations and ranged weapons to clean up dangerous targets.
Doubles your Evolution stat, amplifying every Evolution-scaling item and effect you pick up. On Variant, who wants as much Evolution as possible, this is one of the strongest single pickups once your baseline Evolution is decent.
Pairs well with Variant’s tendency to cycle through many items via mutation and recycling. Cheaper dismantles mean more economy and smoother transitions when mutations turn a weapon or item into something off-plan.
Offsets Variant’s -25% XP Gain by making each level-up much more impactful. The added stats are amplified by how long Variant runs tend to go, giving you very strong stat pages in the late game.
Damage that ramps within a wave synergizes with Variant’s long, mutation-heavy playstyle. On high waves, the scaling part vastly outweighs the initial penalty, especially when combined with Evolution damage sources.
Variant High Difficulty / Late Game Strategy
Early Game
On high difficulty, treat the early waves as survival first: grab a safe ranged starter like Machine Gun or Pistol, and prioritize flat Ranged Damage, Attack Speed and some Max HP. Avoid over-committing to greed items before you can reliably clear mutated enemies. Buy multiple cheap items early so that your automatic mutations and tumors have targets, but don’t rely on mutations to fix a weak stat page—take solid level-up stats whenever offered.
Mid Game
From mid game onward, start leaning heavily into Evolution-focused items. Stack Evolution (via Jamming Backpack, Evolved Leap and similar items) so that tumours copy stronger effects and evolved enemies become both your main threat and your main resource, thanks to Exothermic Reaction, Flare and Boosted Mitosis. Consolidate your weapons into a small set of high-tier ranged options and invest in defenses: 3–5 Armor, decent HP Regeneration, and some Life Steal help you survive sudden projectile bursts and puddle damage.
Late Game
In late waves and Endless, Variant’s goal is to let your mutations and red-tier items carry fights. Keep your Evolution high and continue buying items so mutation rolls are always valuable. Use explosive and piercing weapons (Sticky Grenade, Minigun, Obliterator) plus Evolution-area effects to delete dense evolved packs before they can surround you. Against elites and bosses, play around their patterns, avoid puddles and on-death explosions, and use your stacked Tumor bonuses and damage multipliers to burn them down quickly.
💡 Variant excels in long, high-difficulty runs that give its mutation engine time to ramp. Focus on a stable ranged core, stack Evolution and evolution-synergy items, and constantly feed the mutation system with new items. If you survive the fragile early game, Variant can snowball into one of the most powerful and chaotic late-game characters.
Variant FAQ
1How do I unlock Variant in Brotato?▼
Variant is unlocked by default. You can select Variant from the character screen without needing to complete any prior achievements.
2How does Variant's mutation and evolution mechanic work?▼
Variant can only evolve on the Mutant side. Mutated enemies can drop mutation fruits that increase your evolution value. At the end of each wave, Variant automatically mutates once, either transforming an item (often upgrading its tier or removing a negative) or adding a copied item effect to a Tumor. With higher Evolution, copied effects and mutated items become stronger.
3What are the best weapons for Variant?▼
Variant performs best with strong ranged weapons that benefit from flat Ranged Damage and high fire rate. Machine Gun is an excellent starter; later you can transition into Minigun, Obliterator, Sticky Grenade and supportive tools like Tranq Rifle.
4Which stats should I prioritize on Variant?▼
Prioritize Ranged Damage and Attack Speed so your guns clear waves and evolved enemies reliably. Then add defensive stats—Max HP, Armor and HP Regeneration—so you can survive dense jungle waves. Evolution from items is also a key "stat" to stack, as it directly powers your mutations and several synergy items.
5Is Variant good for Endless runs?▼
Yes. Variant scales extremely well into Endless because tumors can accumulate many copied effects and Wildfire Mutation-style upgrades keep pushing your item tiers higher. If you manage the early game and build enough Evolution, Variant becomes progressively stronger the longer the run goes.
