Brotato Caveman Build Guide & Melee Fog Strategy
Caveman Build & Fossil-Primitive Nahkampf-Guide
Is Caveman good in Brotato?
Caveman is a strong, high-synergy melee character built around primitive weapons and fossils, but the permanent fog and lack of ranged options make positioning and map awareness much harder than usual.
Strengths
- Huge damage scaling on primitive weapons by burning higher‑tier melee weapons
- Naturally synergizes with the fossil item set for tanky melee stats
- Fog visibility can be improved proactively, rewarding smart shop and burn decisions
- Pure melee focus keeps your weapon pool consistent and easy to optimize
Weaknesses
- Permanent fog and reduced visibility make dodging projectiles and elites much harder
- No access to ranged weapons limits safe kiting and forces you into close combat
- Requires good item knowledge to stack fossils and the right melee stats
- Burning weapons removes them permanently, so misplays can cripple your damage curve
How to unlock Caveman in Brotato
Requirement: Equip 5 fossils in a single run
Complete the in-game challenge described below. If it feels tight, drop Danger level, prioritise defensive stats first, then pivot into the gimmick the challenge wants.
Caveman Stats & Passive Ability
Caveman plays as a pure melee brawler who must handle waves in low visibility while scaling primitive weapons. You cannot equip ranged weapons at all, so you need to commit to melee-centric positioning and constantly move to avoid unseen projectiles. The permanent fog gets worse every wave, but you can burn your weapons in the shop to partially clear it and gain bonus damage on your primitive weapons based on the tier of the sacrificed weapon. This creates an interesting tension: powerful high-tier melee weapons can be burned at key breakpoints to both boost visibility and spike your primitive damage. Because fossils synergize so well with melee stats like Max HP, Armor, Speed and Life Steal, Caveman naturally wants to stack as many fossil pieces as possible while focusing his level-ups on Melee Damage, Max HP, HP Regeneration, Attack Speed and a bit of Dodge and Speed to safely navigate the fog.

Strategy
🌱Early Game
In the early waves, your goal is to establish a primitive melee core while surviving the initial fog ramp-up. Start with basic primitive weapons such as Stick, Rock or Sword, and grab a Torch if it appears to add burning and access to elemental scaling via Charcoal. Prioritize cheap defensive stats on level-ups – Max HP, a bit of Armor, and HP Regeneration – along with early Melee Damage. Economy tools like Bag, Fertilizer or Gentle Alien are fine if they do not cripple your survivability. Avoid burning weapons too early: keep your melee slots filled, and only burn a spare low-tier weapon if you are really struggling with visibility. Try to pick at least 2–3 fossil pieces (Fossil: Tooth, Fossil: Right Arm, Fossil: Tail) as they start amplifying one another immediately.
⚡Mid Game
From mid game onward, the fog becomes thick and elites/projectiles are harder to see, so you must solidify both your damage and defensive layers. Focus your weapon pool on 4–6 strong primitive melee weapons like Cacti Club (great built-in AOE), Torch (for constant burning and crowd control), Spear or Sword. When you start finding higher-tier melee weapons that don’t fit your final plan, burn them in the shop to both clear some fog and permanently boost your primitive damage based on the tier burned. Prioritize key fossils such as Fossil: Skull for damage, Fossil: Right Arm and Left Arm for Max HP and Armor, Fossil: Left Leg and Right Leg for Speed and Range (even for melee, range helps with reach), Fossil: Spine for Regen and Fossil: Jaw for Life Steal. Complement them with items like Mastery, Goat Skull and Mammoth to stack raw Melee Damage and HP Regeneration. At this stage, level-ups should almost always go into Melee Damage, Attack Speed, Max HP and HP Regeneration, with occasional points into Dodge and Speed to make dodging through fog more forgiving.
🔥Late Game & Bosses
In late game and high difficulty waves, Caveman plays like an ultra-tanky melee bruiser that punches through hordes despite poor visibility. By now you should have most fossil pieces online and 6 strong primitive weapons, with a couple of them boosted by burning multiple high-tier weapons earlier. Before elite and boss waves, consider burning any non-core high-tier melee weapons for one last big primitive damage spike and fog relief – this is especially useful when projectiles start layering on top of the fog. Stack more Armor (Helmet, Warrior Helmet, Metal Plate, Stone Skin) and Max HP (Alien Baby, Panda, Padding) so you can afford the occasional unseen hit. Keep boosting Melee Damage and Attack Speed to shorten boss phases, since long fights are dangerous when you cannot always see telegraphs in the fog. If you transition into Endless, you will eventually rely on fossils, scaling Max HP, HP Regeneration and Life Steal (Fossil: Jaw, Mouse, Bloody Hand, Whetstone) to sustain through chip damage while your primitive weapons, supercharged by burned tiers, clear the screen.
Best weapons for Caveman
Stick is an excellent core weapon for Caveman because it is primitive, cheap and scales multiplicatively with itself. Burning spare high-tier melee weapons massively boosts your Stick damage while the set bonus keeps your early waves stable.
Cacti Club is a primitive blunt weapon with built-in AOE, perfect for cutting through hordes you can’t fully see in the fog. The bonus projectiles scale with your Melee Damage, and burning other weapons further amplifies its wave-clear.
Torch adds burning and soft crowd control to a Caveman build. Even though it relies partly on Elemental Damage, its primitive tag synergizes with your passive and burning weapons, and spread burning helps control enemies that emerge from the fog.
Rock is a sturdy primitive weapon that naturally grants Armor and Max HP, both of which Caveman loves for surviving surprise hits in the fog. It keeps your damage relevant while doubling as a defensive tool.
Spear offers longer melee reach, which is very valuable when you can’t always see threats clearly. It lets you hit enemies earlier while staying slightly safer, and still benefits from Caveman’s primitive burn scaling.
Sword’s combination of thrusting and sweeping attacks gives flexible coverage around your character, which is crucial in low-visibility combat. As a solid generic melee option, it pairs well with more specialized primitive weapons.
Best items for Caveman (core item pool)
Fossil: Skull is the single best offensive fossil for Caveman, multiplying your damage for every fossil piece you own. As you stack more fossils, your primitive melee attacks receive enormous percentage boosts that stack with burning bonuses.
Fossil: Right Arm gives flat Max HP that scales with your total fossil count, helping Caveman tank surprise hits inside the fog. Combined with other fossils, it turns you into a high-health juggernaut with strong melee sustain.
Fossil: Left Arm scales Armor per fossil, perfectly matching Caveman’s face-tanking melee style. Once you have several fossils, this item alone can provide a huge chunk of damage mitigation against elites and bosses.
Fossil: Left Leg gives scaling Speed, which is crucial when fog and projectiles make dodging tricky. Higher movement speed lets Caveman reposition quickly, chase down enemies, and avoid unseen attacks.
Fossil: Right Leg increases Range per fossil, subtly boosting how far your melee hits can reach. This extra reach is especially valuable in foggy conditions where you want to kill enemies before they crowd on top of you.
Fossil: Spine builds massive HP Regeneration as you collect more fossils, offsetting its small damage penalty. For a melee character constantly in danger, large regeneration greatly improves your sustain between hits.
Fossil: Tail supplies strong Harvesting scaling via the fossil mechanic, giving Caveman a better economy without needing to invest many level-ups. The slight Max HP penalty is offset by other fossil arms and torso pieces.
Fossil: Jaw provides Life Steal that scales with fossil count, letting your constant melee hits restore large amounts of HP. Combined with Caveman’s high attack frequency and Max HP, it turns close combat into a reliable heal source.
Fossil: Tooth is mainly a fossil counter, cheaply increasing the value of all your other fossil items. Even though it reduces Max HP, the amplification to Skull, Right Arm, Left Arm and Spine more than compensates in a full fossil build.
Charcoal simultaneously buffs Melee Damage and Elemental Damage, ideal when running Torch or other burning sources on Caveman. It enhances both your physical hits and burns, increasing your ability to clear waves in fog.
Mammoth gives huge flat Melee Damage and HP Regeneration, exactly what a Caveman wants for tanky brawling. The global damage and Speed penalties are mitigated by your heavy fossil scaling and other Speed items.
Mastery is pure upside for Caveman: you cannot use ranged weapons anyway, so losing Ranged Damage is irrelevant. The extra Melee Damage is a direct multiplier to every primitive hit you land.
Goat Skull offers efficient flat Melee Damage at the cost of a small Crit Chance penalty, which is usually acceptable for Caveman. It helps smooth your early and mid-game damage curve with a very cheap pickup.
Caveman High Difficulty Strategy
Early Game
On high difficulty, play early waves conservatively: prioritize staying alive in the growing fog over greed. Build a stable mix of primitive melee weapons and grab a few fossils plus core defensive stats like Max HP, Armor and HP Regeneration before chasing high damage. Avoid burning weapons too early so you do not fall behind in damage and clear speed.
Mid Game
In mid game, start exploiting Caveman’s burn mechanic by sacrificing spare high-tier melee weapons for permanent primitive damage and better visibility, especially before elite waves. Continue stacking fossils and melee-focused items like Mastery, Charcoal and Mammoth. Keep Attack Speed, Melee Damage and Speed climbing so you can burst down elites and react to unseen projectiles.
Late Game
Late game, treat Caveman as a fog-tank who must end waves quickly. Before boss waves, burn any non-core high-tier melee to maximize primitive damage and minimize fog thickness. Make sure you have high Armor, very high Max HP and strong self-healing through HP Regeneration and Life Steal from fossils. Constantly reposition to avoid overlapping patterns you can’t fully see.
💡 Caveman is perfectly capable of handling high difficulty runs, but you must respect the obscuring fog and lean into fossil and primitive synergies. Build a thick defensive layer, then use burning to transform excess weapons into both visibility and massive damage spikes right before elites and bosses. With enough fossils and melee scaling, you can chew through dense waves even when you cannot see every threat.
Caveman FAQ
1How do I unlock Caveman in Brotato?▼
Caveman is unlocked by equipping 5 fossils in a single run. Look for fossil items like Fossil: Skull, Fossil: Right Arm, Fossil: Left Arm, Fossil: Tooth and others, then pick them all on the same character until you reach five.
2What are the best weapons for Caveman?▼
The best weapons for Caveman are primitive melee options such as Stick, Cacti Club, Torch, Rock, Spear and Sword. They all benefit from his passive that grants bonus damage to primitive weapons when you burn other weapons.
3How should I use the fog and burn mechanic on Caveman?▼
Use the fog mechanic proactively: keep your melee board filled early, then burn spare or off-build high-tier melee weapons in the shop to both clear some fog and permanently boost your primitive damage. Time big burns before elite and boss waves for maximum impact.
4Which stats should I prioritize on Caveman?▼
Focus on Melee Damage, Max HP, HP Regeneration and Attack Speed first, then add Armor, Dodge and some Speed. These stats let you survive surprise hits in the fog while your primitive weapons, boosted by fossils and burning, handle damage.
5Are fossils good on Caveman?▼
Yes. Caveman wants as many fossil items as possible. Fossils like Fossil: Skull, Right Arm, Left Arm, Spine, Tail and Jaw scale off each other and provide huge boosts to Damage, Max HP, Armor, HP Regeneration, Life Steal, Speed and more.
6Can Caveman use ranged weapons?▼
No. Caveman cannot equip ranged weapons at all, so all of your offense must come from melee, elemental melee and structures. This makes melee positioning and defensive scaling especially important.
