What does Max HP do in Brotato?
Max HP is your health bar – the total amount of damage you can take before dying. Most characters start with 10 Max HP by default and gain +1 Max HP whenever they level up. A healthy Max HP cushion stops you from being one-shot by tougher enemies in the late waves, and it scales perfectly with healing from HP Regeneration, Life Steal, and consumables. Many of the strongest scaling items in Brotato (Stone Skin, Alien Eyes, Potato Thrower, Chopper) use Max HP as their damage source, which makes investing into HP both defensive AND offensive on those builds.
Max HP Mechanics & Edge Cases
- •Handcuffs locks your Max HP at the value it had when you bought the item. You can still raise the stat, but your HP bar will not exceed the cap. Scaling items still scale with your real Max HP stat.
- •The hard engine cap is 999,999 Max HP. You will only ever bump into this in Endless Mode or with mods.
- •If you push Max HP to 0 or below (very possible on Apprentice), you start every wave with 1 HP – but the stat itself stays negative until you raise it back above 0.
- •Max HP scaling weapons (Potato Thrower, Chopper) keep scaling beyond the Handcuffs cap because they read the stat, not the HP bar.

Max HP FAQ
How much Max HP is enough in Brotato?▾
On most characters, 60–100 Max HP by wave 13 is a comfortable safety margin. Tank-style characters like Brawler or Bull aim for 150+ paired with strong healing. Glass-cannon builds like Crazy or Streamer often stay around 25–40 Max HP and rely on dodge and damage to win.
Does Max HP scale with anything in Brotato?▾
Yes. Several damage-dealing items use Max HP as their damage source: Alien Eyes, Baby Elephant scaling, Spiky Shield, Potato Thrower, and Chopper. On HP-stacking builds these turn Max HP into your primary damage stat.
Should I always buy Max HP items?▾
No. Max HP without healing or HP scaling weapons is just defensive cushion. On Mutant or Brawler it is core, on Crazy or Cyborg it is often a wasted stat slot. Always check whether you have a way to heal or scale damage off it.
What is the Brotato Max HP cap?▾
The hard engine cap is 999,999 Max HP – you will only see this in Endless Mode or modded runs. Handcuffs creates a soft cap that locks your HP bar at its current value but does NOT stop scaling items from reading the underlying stat.
